1976 Audi 100 (C2)

In 1976, the 100 received new square-rigged styling to bring it up to speed with the opposition. Like the 80, it was light, efficient and lacking in soul. But the following year, the fitment of an in-line five-cylinder engine added some much-needed character. The throbby power unit lacked the smoothness of its rivals’ sixes, but it was economical and pushed the injection versions to almost 120mph. The 100 has aged well, even in utilitarian Avant form, and it proved to be an effective basis for the more glamorous models that followed.
