In 1968, the second generation of Type 2 thoroughly (and, some might say, belatedly) modernised the looks, with a single piece windscreen, thus earning the model the nickname of the ‘Bay Window.’ Although with less character to their styling, these VWs were easier to drive with improved suspension and larger engines; at introduction there was a 1584cc unit with a 1679cc one from 1971, when disc brakes also appeared.
