After a decade of Formula One success, McLaren turned to the task of producing a roadgoing supercar. Given that Gordon Murray was the project’s co-ordinator, and he had an obsession for lightness and detail, it was clear that the new car would be far from ordinary. When it emerged, the 627bhp BMW-powered, Peter Stevens-styled three-seater was a masterpiece. 0-150mph in 12.8 seconds and a top speed of 231mph might seem like an irrelevance, but it’s a glorious one – and one that its £1m-plus market value clearly reflects.
