1981 Lotus Esprit S3

Wearing most of the body, chassis and interior revisions introduced for the Turbo model the year before, the Esprit S3 also signalled a major leap forward in quality and reliability. There’s a lot more sound insulation too, allegedly reducing noise levels inside by 50%. Despite the larger bumpers and sided air scoops, the design stays true to Giugiaro’s concept. The rear wheels and tyres are larger, and lower profile rubber is used to further sharpen the Esprit’s superb handling and grip. Despite now being cheaper, experts say these are a much better bet than the S1 and S2.
