Yes, it’s an Allegro. With a faux-Bentley grille and a rather pretentious air. When the Allegro superseded the 1300 range, it seemed only logical that a posh version would follow to satisfy British Leyland devotees who prized luxury motoring in a small package. The disproportionate grille did little for the Allegro’s already inelegant looks but it had a great interior. Those picnic tables were there, alongside the walnut veneer and hide. Most cars had 1485cc OHC engines of 68bhp but in the final couple of years there was a 90bhp 1748cc unit, only mated to automatic transmission.
