When new, these sporting coupés were considered the dynamic inferiors to their European rivals, but considering the A20/35 generation Celica was to the Carina what the Capri was to the Cortina, they were very much the same thing. Sold in huge numbers in Japan and the USA, the Celica was a braver choice over here, although bulletproof reliability made ownership a painless experience. Rust and indifference killed most, but their chitzy mid-Atlantic styling has made these cult cars in the burgeoning Jap car scene.
