1987 Lotus Esprit Turbo/SE (X180)

A subtle redesign by Peter Stevens knocks some of the sharp edges off Giugiaro’s original styling, and the opportunity is also used to create more interior space. Mechanically, both normally aspirated and Turbo versions carry on as before, with the exception of a little extra power in the lesser car to pull more weight. Also the Citroën SM transmissions have become obsolete, so Renault GTA units are used instead, along with outboard rear brakes. For spotters, the Turbo has flush glass covering the space between the rear buttresses, while there’s none on the standard car.
