1978 Vauxhall Carlton/Viceroy

The rapid Opelization of the Vauxhall continued apace throughout the 1970s, and with the arrival of the Carlton – a rebranded Opel Rekord – in 1978, it heralded the end of the long-lived Victor range. The 2-litre saloon was solidly engineered and competent to drive, but lacked glamour to take the fight to the Ford Granada and Rover SD1. Six-cylinder Viceroy model (the UK badged Opel Commodore) followed in 1980, and proved even less popular. Find either now, and you’ll be rewarded with a prime slice of German solidity, with a dash of Luton homeliness.
