1968 Volvo VOLVO 164

Seeking to enter the luxury realms of Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, Volvo unveiled the 164 in 1968. It was based on the 140-series, albeit with a longer body and 2978cc six-cylinder engine lurking behind its much grander grille, plus generous equipment. On the TE, owners got leather, air conditioning and power steering. The cars started with 145bhp, but when fuel injection arrived in 1971, this rose to 175bhp. The fitment of built-in foglamps from 1969 was a very Jaguar touch, but the 164 failed to appeal as much as the prettier Jags it wanted to emulate, despite the better build quality.
