Later Countaches might have lost the design purity of the original, but the addition of fat low-profile P7 rubber and engine and aero upgrades kept it on the pace into the ‘80s. The Quattrovalvole engine saw power leap to over 400bhp but, in truth, road testers never got anywhere close to matching the fanciful claimed top speed of over 190mph. That didn’t really matter too much – it was still faster than a Ferrari Boxer, and could stop traffic with those looks. The cars that followed it continued the formula most successfully.
